Une nouvelle version de la loi sur les matériaux de carrière (Quarry Materials Act) a été adoptée en janvier 1999. Cette nouvelle version redéfinit les matériaux de carrière afin d’en exclure les pierres de taille. Ces dernières sont désormais considérées comme des minéraux dont l’exploitation relève des dispositions de la loi sur les minéraux (Mineral Act). Le changement de définition ne s’applique pas au Labrador en raison de ses conséquences éventuelles sur les revendications territoriales autochtones en suspens dans la région.
