Méthode, empruntée aux statisticiens, a été appliquée aux sables par P.D. Trask en 1930. Les quartiers ou quartiles sont trois points de la courbe : le premier quartile Q1 est le point de la courbe pour lequel 75 % du matériel est d'une taille supérieure à celui de la taille considérée et 25 % d'une taille inférieure. Le deuxième quartile Q2 est la taille pour laquelle il y a 50 % de matériel de taille supérieure, 50 % en dessous. Le troisième quartile Q3 correspond à la taille pour laquelle 25 % du matériel est d'une taille supérieure et 75 % en dessous.
