Les salamandres, croit-on, jouissaient du privilège de traverser la flamme sans se brûler, d'où le nom donné à cette sorte de poêle pour en marquer la durée et la résistance. Les Canadiens lui donnent un nom aussi pittoresque qui rappelle la lenteur de la combustion. Ils l'appellent tortue.
