The effects of rapid technological change have been experienced most profoundly in the air sector. The Department has encountered a number of challenges, for example, in the development and implementation of its Radar Modernization Project (RAMP) and Canadian Automated Air Traffic System (CAATS) project. RAMP, completed in 1995, has modernized the air traffic control radar network. CAATS, now the responsibility of NAV CANADA, is designed to automate air traffic control operations across the country.

Les effets de l'évolution technologique se sont surtout fait sentir dans le secteur du transport aérien. C'est ainsi que le Ministère a eu à faire face à de nombreux problèmes lors de l'élaboration et de la mise en œuvre de son Projet de modernisation des radars (RAMP) et du projet d'automatisation du Système canadien de contrôle de la circulation aérienne (CAATS). Le projet RAMP, mené à terme en 1995, a permis de moderniser le réseau de radars utilisé pour le contrôle de la circulation aérienne. Le projet relève maintenant de NAV CANADA et vise l'automatisation de toutes les activités de contrôle aérien qui se déroulent au pays.
