Substance radioactive inutilisable obtenue lors du traitement ou de la manipulation de matériaux radioactifs, notamment lors du traitement de combustibles irradiés.

OBS

Ces résidus sont conditionnés sous une forme insoluble (bitume, ciment, verre, céramique) et stockés dans des endroits appropriés, par exemple mines de sel. Ils sont gardés constamment sous contrôle en vue de détecter toute fuite éventuelle.

OBS

Ne pas confondre avec effluents radioactifs qui peuvent provenir notamment du traitement des résidus radioactifs. Les effluents radioactifs sont rejetés dans l'environnement lorsqu'ils sont de très faible concentration et qu'ils ne peuvent entraîner aucun risque inacceptable pour les populations.
