Pour évaluer le potentiel d'une électrode, on combine cette électrode, on combine cette électrode avec une autre électrode de référence (électrode à hydrogène) dont le potentiel est attribué conventionnellement. Il suffit de mesurer la différence de potentiel entre les deux demi-éléments. En soustrayant le potentiel de l'électrode de référence, on obtient le potentiel de l'autre électrode.
