La désinfection secondaire consiste à maintenir (ou à introduire et à maintenir) une concentration résiduelle d'un agent désinfectant dans tout le réseau de distribution. La désinfection secondaire remplit plusieurs fonctions : protéger l'eau contre une nouvelle contamination microbiologique; réduire les risques d'une nouvelle prolifération de bactéries; limiter la formation d'un film biologique; révéler une défectuosité ou une panne quelque part dans le réseau de distribution (la perte d'une teneur résiduelle en chlore ou en un autre agent désinfectant peut indiquer une panne ou une défectuosité).
