When beverage can makers began using the term "ring-pull", it was to designate a new "ring-shaped" tab. After decades of production of ring-shaped tabs, the terms "ring-pull" and "tab" ended up being used as synonyms.

Toutefois, employés seuls, «anneau» et «languette», comme «tab» et «ring-pull», réfèrent à la même notion et sont utilisés comme synonymes.
