Parmi les jouets antiques du Québec, le cheval de bois occupe une place privilégiée. Les artisans menuisiers ou sculpteurs ont fabriqué des chevaux sur roulettes (ou à roulettes), à patins, à berceaux (ou chevaux berçants), à bascule (ou en balançoire), tous pouvant être enfourchés par un enfant. Le mouvement du cheval berçant ou cheval à berceaux, est celui de la berceuse; celui du cheval à bascule ou cheval en balançoire est sensiblement le même, sauf qu'avec un mécanisme un peu plus sophistiqué, le va-et-vient du cheval de bois imite davantage la projection vers l'avant puis l'arrière d'un cavalier en selle.
