Opération qui consiste à calculer le total des débits et des crédits d'un compte afin de dégager son solde que l'on porte au crédit s'il est débiteur, et au débit s'il est créditeur. Le total des débits du compte après cette inscription est alors nécessairement égal à celui des crédits, et on souligne généralement ces deux totaux identiques, de deux traits pour indiquer l'arrêt du compte.

OBS

Cette opération est immédiatement suivie de la réouverture du compte qui consiste à inscrire le solde au débit s'il est débiteur, et au crédit s'il est créditeur. Cette inscription doit être précédée du libellé solde à nouveau ou tout simplement à nouveau.
