Il assure une double protection : bien ajusté (pas trop serré), il déclenche advenant une chute et libère le ski, empêchant une possible fracture de la jambe; muni de crans d'arrêt, il empêche alors le ski de dévaler la pente ou de se perdre dans les côtés de piste.
