Lorsqu'un étalement du sel en surface [...] se produit dans une famille de diapirs voisins, la structure résultante est appelée «canopée de sel» [...] L'étalement des chapeaux de diapirs peut être suffisant pour qu'ils deviennent jointifs et produisent une nouvelle couche de sel au-dessus de la couverture sédimentaire, en laissant toutefois des sutures entre les chapeaux de diapirs voisins. Ce mécanisme est l'un de ceux que l'on invoque pour expliquer la formation de couches de sel secondaire dite «sel allochtone» dans certains bassins salifères, comme par exemple le Golfe du Mexique.
