Samhain, the festival of 31 October and 1 November, a liminal, dangerous occasion when time and space were suspended, and the barriers between the supernatural and earthly worlds were temporarily dissolved, so that the spirits could interfere with human affairs and mortals could enter the realms of the dead.

The Irish ritual calendar began with the great Samhain festival gathering on 1 November. It was a pastoral affair, a time when the harvest fruits had been gathered and offerings made to the ancestors to share in the general good fortune.

Samain est, au premier novembre, la fête irlandaise de loin la mieux attestée ou, au moins, celle dont les mentions sont les plus fréquentes dans les récits mythologiques et épiques, celle qui a le plus intéressé ou intrigué les érudits. La fête du Samain était l'occasion pour les chefs des provinces irlandaises, de se réunir à Tara, la capitale, lors de rituels religieux et de plantureux banquets, pour fixer les missions diplomatiques et sceller les alliances.
