Le terme «Sick Building Syndrome» (SBS ou Syndrome des Bâtiments Malades), utilisé depuis les années 1970, recouvre une symptomatologie complexe, non spécifique, atypique et indiscutablement liée à l'occupation des locaux. Sa définition très large traduit bien le caractère multifactoriel du problème, qui touche entre 10 et 30% des occupants d'un bâtiment malsain ou «malade». Les facteurs associés au SBS sont multiples: ambiants (chimiques, biologiques, climatiques, environnementaux), personnels, sociaux, organisationnels. Les symptômes les plus fréquemment observés sont: irritation et obstruction nasale; sécheresse et irritation de la muqueuse des yeux, de la gorge, de la peau; manifestations générales (migraine, léthargie, état de fatigue conduisant à un manque de concentration). Des nausées, un changement dans la perception des odeurs et du goût, toux et sifflements respiratoires sont parfois également signalés.
