Si l'on voulait donner une définition d'un vaisseau, on pourrait dire que c'est un élément de conduction longitudinal (c'est-à-dire parallèle à l'axe de l'arbre), de longueur indéfinie, formé de cellules individuelles (appelées membres ou segments) jointes bout à bout. La membrane qui unit les segments à chaque bout peut être ouverte complètement ou partiellement dissoute, laissant dans ce cas des fils, un peu comme les barreaux d'une échelle. Ces ouvertures sont appelées pores : pore terminal simple (ou pore terminal non grillagé) et pore terminal grillagé.
