Tous les objets présentent une particularité très intéressante. Leur tout est à l'image de leurs parties. Et inversement. La ressemblance est parfaite lorsqu'il s'agit d'un objet mathématique comme l'éponge de Menger; elle est approximative pour un objet réel, une fougère ou une côte. Les chercheurs parlent de symétrie par invariance d'échelle ou d'autosimilarité.

OBS

Cette nouvelle géométrie va opérer une jonction avec la description des systèmes dynamiques et fournir un puissant levier à la science du chaos. Cette jonction avec le chaos se fait par l'intermédiaire des attracteurs étranges, inventés en 1971 par le physicien-théoricien David Ruelle et le mathématicien hollandais Floris Takens.
