A peptide composed of 15 amino acids that has been isolated from the brain tissue of rats and mice conditioned to fear the dark; on injection into normal rodents, it is said to induce fear of dark.

Si l'on prépare, à partir du cerveau de ces rats donneurs entraînés, un extrait que l'on administre à des receveurs (en général des souris), les receveurs passent moins de temps dans la boîte noire. G. Ungar en avait conclu au transfert d'un facteur cérébral codant la peur du noir acquise par les donneurs. La purification de ce facteur avait conduit à la découverte d'un peptide de quinze acides aminés que G. Ungar avait nommé «scotophobine» (c'est-à-dire qui provoque la peur de l'obscurité).
