Bien que le terme «spicilège» soit couramment employé dans le milieu scolaire canadien pour désigner «scrapbook», il existe certaines distinctions entre «scrapbook» et «spicilège». D'après le Grand Robert, le spicilège est «un recueil d'actes, traités, documents interdits». Par contre, la définition du Grand Larousse encyclopédique se rapproche un peu plus de la notion anglaise : «recueil de morceaux choisis, de documents variés, d'observations». Il vaudrait toutefois mieux d'éviter d'employer «spicilège» dans le sens de «scrapbook». C'est d'ailleurs l'avis du Comité linguistique de Radio-Canada.
