L'arc-en-ciel marin paraît assez souvent lorsque la mer est extrêmement agitée, et que le vent, soulevant ses vagues, fait que les rayons du Soleil qui tombent sur leur surface, se réfractent et y peignent les mêmes couleurs que dans les gouttes de pluie ordinaires. Les couleurs de l'arc-en-ciel marin sont cependant moins vives, moins distinctes, et de moindre durée que celles de l'arc-en-ciel ordinaire.
