L'échauffement du sol continental, dès le milieu de la matinée, crée un phénomène ascendant compensé par un courant qui s'établit de la mer, plus froide, vers la terre; la brise cesse en fin d'après-midi. La brise de mer se présente comme une mini-advection d'air froid avec sa surface frontale appelé «front de brise».
