After a generalized sedimentary gap during the Lower Cretaceous, the margin becomes different in two paleogeographic realms at the beginning of the Late Cretaceous.

Les nodules reposent sur 10 cm de sédiment quaternaire (argile rouge des grands fonds). On passe ensuite à des sédiments de l'Oligocène supérieur, soit un hiatus sédimentaire de 30 millions d'années.

On a pu alors observer plusieurs niveaux de nodules interstratifiés, correspondant le plus souvent à des hiatus de sédimentation, de telle manière que, par exemple, sur une épaisseur de 1 m il y ait autant de nodules dans le sédiment qu'en surface.
