La théorie du gène égoïste de Richard Dawkins et Georges Willials apparait diamétralement à l’opposé de la sélection hiérarchique défendue par Gould : elle propose que les entités réellement sélectionnées, les véritables cibles de la sélection naturelle, sont les gènes et non les organismes.
