Les jardins pittoresques se formèrent, de façon assez inattendue, lorsque commença de s'exercer en Europe l'influence de l'art chinois. [...] Dès 1685, au temps où Versailles connaissait sa plus grande splendeur, Sir William Temple, dans son Essai sur les Jardins d'Épicure et l'art des Jardins en l'année 1685, introduisait le premier et popularisait un terme prétendument adapté du chinois et appelé à une grande fortune, le mot barbare de sharawaggi par lequel il entendait les dissymétries gracieuses et pittoresques du jardin chinois.
