sink-hole; sinkhole : Le terme «sink-hole» signifie tout trou, caverne ou cavité conique qui est formé par l'action de l'eau sur la terre, la pierre ou les strates sous-jacentes et qui forment fréquemment le lit d'un cours d'eau souterrain. En français, le terme à utiliser dépendra de la nature du «sink-hole». Lorsque l'on parle de «sink-hole» dans le domaine de la route, on utilisera «affaissement de chaussée». Dans le domaine de la géologie et de la géomorphologie, on utilisera les termes «doline», «aven», «ponor» et «gouffre absorbant» selon la nature du «sink-hole».

[Sinkholes] are typically caused by: -water main breaks -intensive rain and flooding -ground-water pumping -construction and development practices. Sinkholes can also form when natural water-drainage patterns are changed and new water-diversion systems are developed. Sinkholes are difficult to detect and repair before they appear.
