SINTERING [3 records]

Record 1 2016-08-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Powder Metallurgy
DEF

The thermal treatment of a powder or compact, at a temperature below the melting point of the main constituent, for the purpose of increasing its strength by the bonding together of its particles.

OBS

sintering: term and definition standardized by ISO.

OBS

sintering: term standardized by Environment Canada and the Translation Bureau for use in the Air Pollutant Emission Inventory Report.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Métallurgie des poudres
DEF

Record 2 2009-01-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
DEF

The process of bond formation between snow grains.

CONT

A newborn snowflake that falls out of the sky doesn't stay that way for long. As soon as it lands on the snow surface it begins a rapid process of change. Once again, just like people, as a snowflake ages, its beautiful, angular shape becomes progressively more rounded through time and it forms bonds with its neighbors. In people, it's called growing up; in the snowpack it's called "sintering" - forming bonds with neighboring crystals to create the fabric of the snowpack. As sintering progresses, the snow becomes denser and stronger, which we call "settlement."

CONT

The sintering process will strengthen the bond between snow grains. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

OBS

sintering: term officially approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Phénomènes météorologiques, climatiques et atmosphériques
DEF

Record 3 2003-11-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemistry
DEF

Coalescence of solid particles. Catalysts often suffer during use from a gradual increase in the average size of the crystallites or growth of the primary particles.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chimie
DEF
