The turn and slip indicator is a combination of two instruments; the turn needle and the ball. The needle is gyro operated to show rate of turn. The ball reacts to centrifugal force to indicate the quality of a turn ... In a skid, the rate of turn is too great for the angle of bank. Centrifugal force moves the ball to the outside of the turn. Increasing the bank or slowing the rate of turn will correct a skid.

Indicateur de virage ou bille-aiguille : Instrument électrique indiquant si l'avion est en virage à gauche ou à droite. Le bas de l'instrument est équipé d'une bille qui évolue dans un liquide amortisseur; celle-ci permet de contrôler l'absence de «dérapage» de l'avion durant un virage. Aux limites, un fort dérapage sous facteur de charge peut entraîner un décrochage.

Par l'effet de la force centrifuge, l'avion dérape vers l'extérieur. L'opération inverse est le glissement ou la glissade sur l'aile.

Although they are sometimes confused, skidding is not synonymous with forwarding or yarding. Forwarding differs in that the logs do not come into contact with the ground and yarding differs in that the logs are carried on a cable or by a helium-filled balloon.
