Sooty pitchblende represents a finely disseminated variety that has been derived from massive or botryoidal pitchblende by hydration shattering, as indicated by the preserved forms and structures.

Les minéralogistes ont coutume de distinguer la «parapechblende» [...] et la néopechblende, située dans les zones de décoloration et près de la surface. Cette néopechblende est essentiellement liée aux possibilités de remaniement non oxydant en milieu acide (présence de melnicovite). Pour nous la néopechblende ou «sooty pitchblende» des auteurs anglo-saxons est une pechblende de cémentation.

La néopechblende représente une variété finement disséminée dérivée de pechblende massive ou botryoïdale par suite d'une fragmentation par hydratation, tel que le révèlent les structures et les formes préservées.
