Project Description: This Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) Project was undertaken as part of the CWS Latin American Program, initiated in 1980 to support conservation projects shared between Canada and Latin American countries. The South American Shorebird Atlas Project involved a five-year program of aerial surveys undertaken to determine the principle wintering areas used by Nearctic shorebirds on the coast of South America. The surveys, carried out in January/February from 1982 to 1986, covered some 25,000 km. of the South American coastline, including almost all areas thought to contain significant habitat for shorebirds. More than 2.9 million Nearctic shorebirds were counted during the surveys, with small, medium-sized and large species making up 80, 16 and four percent of the total, respectively. 1, record 1, English, - South%20American%20Shorebird%20Atlas%20Project

1, record 1, French, - Projet%20d%27atlas%20des%20oiseaux%20de%20rivage%20de%20l%27Am%C3%A9rique%20du%20Sud
