A term loosely applied to any transparent or translucent, light-colored, nonmetallic, usually readily cleavable, and somewhat lustrous crystalline mineral, esp. one occurring as gangue in a metalliferous vein; eg. calcspar and Iceland spar (calcite), fluorspar (fluorite), heavy spar (barite), or feldspar.
