[La] mesure indirecte [de la pression artérielle] va trouver son principe dans l'essor d'une technique d'études du pouls, la sphygmographie qui apparaît au milieu du XIX siècle à la suite des travaux du Français Hérisson, qui en 1834, conçoit un nouvel instrument destiné «à traduire à l'œil toute l'action des artères». Ce «sphygmomètre», simple et ingénieux, a pour principe l'application d'une colonne de mercure sur une artère de l'avant-bras (artère radiale), il est atraumatique.
