Pour dresser une classification de la famille des rétrovirus, on peut utiliser des critères autres que morphologiques. En s'appuyant sur leur pathogénie et leur structure génétique, on identifie alors trois groupes : - les oncovirus à ARN, les lentivirus et les spumavirus. Les spumavirus sont identifiés chez de nombreux mammifères, y compris chez l'homme. Mais il n'est pas clairement établi qu'il y ait un lien entre une infection par un spumavirus et une pathogénie.
