St. Hans Day falls every year on the same day, 24 June, with St. Hans Night celebrated the night before on the 23rd. In Christian belief, it celebrates the birthday of St. Hans, otherwise known as St. Johannes, the Danish name for St. John the Baptist. The tradition, of course, runs far deeper than that, for St. Hans falls almost exactly at the same time as the longest day of the year, 21 June, or the summer solstice.
