Cette technique, qui dépend des différences de solubilité des solutés dans les deux phases, s'apparente à l'extraction liquide-liquide, mais ici une des phases liquides est immobilisée sur un solide en grains très fins et l'accroissement considérable de la surface de contact entre les deux phases fait que l'on obtient des efficacités très supérieures à celles obtenues en extraction liquide-liquide classique à contre-courant.
