The steam superheater in the land prototype … for Seawolf broke down after 1667 hours of operation. The initial suggestion was to install fast neutron reactors with a helium coolant in Skate-class submarines.

Le Seawolf (États-Unis) était équipé d’un réacteur à neutrons épithermiques refroidi au sodium liquide qui n’a que peu navigué en raison d’une fuite à un surchauffeur de vapeur. Très contesté par la marine américaine qui voyait mal le sodium liquide dans un environnement marin, il fut vite abandonné au bénéfice du Nautilus équipé d’un REP [réacteur à eau sous pression].
