At about the turn of the century, thousands of stellar spectra were available and a more detailed classification was obtained. This classification divided the spectra into classes O, B, A, F, G, K, M, with each major class being subdivided into 10 subclasses.

La couleur d'une étoile est la résultante d'un mélange de radiations lumineuses dont la décomposition par un prisme fournit le spectre. L'étude des spectres stellaires est à la base de l'astrophysique. Elle permet de connaître notamment les éléments chimiques présents dans les couches externes des étoiles et les conditions physiques dans lesquelles ils se trouvent.
