An aliphatic hydrocarbon in which all the carbon atoms are connected in a single chain without branching. Examples include n-butane (short for normal-butane) as opposed to iso-butane (a branched chain hydrocarbon) and n-pentane (normal pentane) as opposed to iso-pentane.
