L'alimentation par injection directe n'est pas tributaire d'une homogénéité préalable du mélange; elle permet, par une disposition appropriée de la bougie d'allumage et de l'injecteur, de réaliser une répartition du combustible telle que mélange carburé soit riche au voisinage de la bougie, et pauvre au fur et à mesure qu'on s'en éloigne. Dans un tel mélange, connu sous le nom de mélange stratifié, l'excès d'air n'altère en rien le bon fonctionnement du moteur.
