L'épilepsie n'est pas mortelle en soi. Cependant, dans de très rares cas, il peut arriver qu'une personne qui vit avec l'épilepsie meure soudainement sans cause apparente. Ce phénomène est appelé «mort subite inattendue et inexpliquée en épilepsie» (MSIE).
