Lors d'explosions volcaniques de grande intensité telles l'éruption du Krakatoa [...] et celle du Katmai [...] les cendres projetées dans la haute atmosphère ont été dispersées sur presque toute la Terre. En essayant de déceler leur présence dans une formation (sédiment ou glace) on peut alors espérer la dater.

Les cendres du Krakatoa (1883) et du Katmaï (1912) se sont dispersées dans la haute atmosphère sur l'ensemble de la Terre, permettant la datation des couches qui les renferment (téphrochronologie).
