La thrombectomie par aspiration a été développée initialement pour compléter les thrombolyses incomplètes ou pour traiter les complications emboliques des angioplasties transluminales. Elle peut être employée comme alternative à la sonde de Fogarty ou à la thrombolyse dans les embolies d'origine cardiaque, voire dans les thromboses sur les artères athéromateuses.
