La presencia de un trombo en una vena se denomina clínicamente tromboflebitis o flebotrombosis. En los vasos periféricos tales trombos suelen empezar en las bolsas valvulares y luego se extienden a lo largo de la pared venosa o dentro de la sangre circulante, o pueden obstruir completamente la luz del vaso.
