La pharmacovigilance (en anglais : «drug monitoring») a été définie comme suit par un Comité de l'OMS : «On entend par pharmacovigilance la notification, l'enregistrement et l'évaluation systématique des réactions adverses aux médicaments délivrés avec ou sans ordonnance.» Ce Comité a établi une distinction entre la pharmacovigilance spontanée, réalisée moyennant des notifications volontaires de médecins praticiens et d'hôpitaux à des centres désignés, et la pharmacovigilance intensive, consistant en l'application de techniques épidémiologiques que permettent de recueillir systématiquement les informations auprès d'hôpitaux, d'échantillons représentatifs de l'ensemble des médecins, etc. Une autre définition a été proposée dans le rapport (2) d'une Réunion sur la surveillance internationale des médicaments : «Toute activité tendant à obtenir des indications systématiques sur les liens de causalité probables entre médicaments et réactions adverses dans une population.» [Source : OMS, Vocabulaire de la santé, 1977, p. 163].
