A chemical compound which appears under the form of white crystals or powder and in used in the production of linear, crystalline polyester resins, fibers and films by combination with glycols, as a reagent for alkali in wool and as an additive to poultry feeds.

The prefixes "ortho-," "meta-" and "para-," along with their corresponding abbreviations ("o-," "m-" and "p-"), appear in italics and are ignored in alphabetizing. According to the actual chemical nomenclature rules in organic chemistry (in 2003), the numbers designating the positions of the disubstitution groups (1,2- for "ortho-," 1,3- for "meta-" and 1,4- for "para-") are to be preferred to the symbols "o-," "m-" and "p-." The TPA is designed to measure the lowest energy particles and gases, providing information which is considered vital to understanding the origin and composition of Martian atmosphere. The instrument consisted of a sensor mounted at the end of a boom, and a central computer inside the spacecraft. Once in orbit around Mars, the boom was to be extended, allowing the sensor to operate without interference from the spacecraft.

Le TPA a été conçu pour recueillir des données sur les particules de très faible énergie ainsi que sur les gaz. Ces données devaient fournir des informations essentielles à la compréhension de la composition de l'atmosphère martienne et de son origine. L'instrument comprenait un capteur monté au bout d'un mât ainsi qu'un ordinateur à l'intérieur du satellite. Une fois sur l'orbite de Mars, le mât devait être déployé pour que le capteur puisse fonctionner sans subir d'interférence du satellite.
