Un canal de télévision est transmis de façon transparente si le signal de sortie correspond au signal d'entrée, c'est-à-dire si aucune information n'est modifiée ni manipulée, sans tenir compte évidemment des erreurs et distorsions indépendantes du temps. Par contre, si le traitement du signal est régi par le contenu de l'image, comme dans le cas des systèmes à réduction de redondance, la transmission du canal de télévision n'est plus transparente.
