L'ozone est toxique pour l'homme, il affecte le rendement des cultures et il contribue au réchauffement climatique. Or, sa concentration dans la troposphère – la partie de l'atmosphère la plus proche de la surface terrestre et dont l'épaisseur varie entre 8 et 15 kilomètres environ – a continué à croître depuis le milieu des années 1990, en dépit de la réduction, par endroits, de certains des composants contribuant à sa formation, issus notamment du trafic routier.
