L'écoulement d'un fluide est, selon les conditions, prévisible ou imprévisible. Quand la vitesse du fluide est très lente, l'écoulement est «laminaire», c'est-à-dire calme, régulier, stationnaire, et l'on peut calculer le comportement du fluide à l'aide des équations de la mécanique des fluides. Dans d'autres circonstances, en revanche, l'écoulement est moins prévisible : il est irrégulier, agité et inégal; c'est le régime turbulent.
