In Angola, a 16-year civil was involved not only Angolan fighters, but also troops from Cuba and South Africa. In 1988, South Africa agreed to leave Angola if the Cuban troops would do the same. UNVEM was created to monitor the withdrawal of both forces. En Angola, une guerre civile dans laquelle étaient engagés non seulement les combattants angolais mais aussi des militaires cubains et sud-africains faisait rage depuis 16 ans. En 1988, l'Afrique du Sud a accepté de quitter l'Angola si les troupes cubaines en faisaient autant. L'UNAVEM a été formée pour surveiller le retrait des deux forces.
