In December 1993, the status of the law of the French National Radioactive WasteManagement Agency (ANDRA) was defined and proposed three possible sites in clay formations and one in granite rocks. On a December 1998, after 4 years ofgeological research, the French government decided to have 2 underground research laboratories: the first one is in a clay of the Paris Basin, at Bare, the second is in a granitic site yet to be determined. 1, record 1, English, - underground%20research%20laboratory

L’Andra [Agence nationale pour la gestion des déchets radioactifs] exploite un laboratoire de recherche souterrain sur la commune de Bure, à la limite entre les départements de la Meuse et de la Haute-Marne. Ce laboratoire permet de caractériser une zone géologique qui s’étend sur 250 km². Les recherches menées depuis 1992 ont abouti, en 2005, à la remise d’un dossier concluant à la faisabilité de principe du stockage dans une couche argileuse (Callovo-Oxfordien) dans cette zone.
