Le premier robot à usage industriel est apparu en 1962 avec la création des Unimates, fabriqués en chaîne par la firme Unimation Inc. à Dambury dans le Connecticut (USA). Ces robots offrent 5 à 7 degrés de liberté. Ils peuvent faire presque le même travail qu'un ouvrier pour un coût 3 à 4 fois inférieur.
