Programme [whose] objective is the constant control and revision of the global environmental situation, promoting sustainable development to help with the preservation of the environment for the benefit of present and future generations. It carries out a coordination role between U.N. organizations and administers a fund set up by voluntary donations from governments.

Established 15 Dec 1972, by General Assembly Resolution 2997 (XXVII), in response to the report of the Secretary-General on the UN Conference on the Human Environment (5-16 June 1972, Stockholm). [See entry no. E4161g].
